"In the beginning was the Word . . ."
Have you ever let your mind wander in those moments before sleep slips silently beside you, the pillow pressing gently under your ear? The roar of a busy day is hushed, and our mind can go anywhere. In those precious few minutes, I wonder about that word, and the power contained in those letters, whatever they might be. What words do you like? Rainbow glow, or incandescent?
Words can change lives. Consider the words 'you're hired'. Or, these words - 'I do'. Think about our U.S. national anthem. As an instrumental it lacks impact except for the remembered meaning of the words. Businesses can grow with the right words. "Coke is it" pushed Coke sales dramatically, until replaced with "Drink Coke". Millions of cases of soda sold, because of words. What words do you like? President, or boss? Do you remember the 90s? In that time, American business swapped sacks of cash for computers, software, licenses, and networks. What of words? Humans are moved by words, not web enabled relational databases. If your customers are human beings, words take your message into their minds. At least, sparkling whirring whizzing giggling words get into their tortoise armored minds which, believe it or not, are hungry for great words. As sinuous as an elephant's trunk, well crafted sentences delicately seek the secret door, turn the handle, and shake hands with your customers. What words do you like? Rich, or well-to-do? Still need convincing that words make money? Alright, get your calculator, because you'll need one to total up the following numbers. How much money did Scholastic earn, as well as Warner Brothers, from the words of J. K. Rowling? Oooo, the objections fly - that was a book! Alright, how much money did Interscope make from Eminem, who brought only words? Let me see, we need a more palatable example. Have you heard of Elton John? Elton wrote the music, and also sang the words, written by Bernie Taupin. Okay, I hear you - that's creative stuff, and doesn't apply to a web site. Another example? I will be happy to oblige. Newspapers make money (and keep their subscriber base) because of their words. With some exceptions, magazines owe their corporate fortunes to words. In fact, the grandest magazine of all was - Readers Digest. Before we had techology IPOs making overnight millionaires and billionaires, Readers Digest did it for their founders. What words do you like? Svelte, or bony? Words are indeed magical. Magical spells are words of power, arranged to unlock mysterious forces and harness them to some purpose. Is the writing at your site releasing a visitor's impulse to drive them to some action you command? Have you got words of power to ignite passions, prick outrage, incite desire, plant craving, create hunger, or instill a dreamy reflection? If you are ready now, let your eyes go out of focus as your home page comes into view inside your mind; slowly pulling back to where you may watch a visitor viewing the site and you realize - do they have a reaction to what they read? Recall your focus back to this page as your breathing shifts remembering the reaction you witnessed. If there is no reaction, you probably didn't make the sale. Here's another wrinkle on the curve ball streaming a long white tail as it tears along the path to home plate; people read text at a web site differently than they do words on paper. This fact alone makes a difference in how to call out emotions from a reader at a web site. If you want web content that sings, words that swing, pages that fly from the screen into the mind, I can help. What words do you like? I like you, or I love you? Thank you for sharing a little time with me. May you find your dreams when you are next out walking, shining rubies, calling to you in flaming red voices . . . and may you have a pocket to collect this treasure! |
